Hi, I’m Meryl Whiteman
Here’s my story
My experience in education spans decades in both public and private early childhood and elementary schools. As a young teacher, I have always sought the best methods for educating. In a NYC public school, I was fortunate that my principal allowed me to make radical changes in my classroom, which led to happier children with higher levels of learning and thinking.
In 1993, I co-founded The Renaissance School (A New-Vision School) with other teachers—another accomplishment on my journey to uncover a better approach to education. Years later, when I studied Montessori education, I wept from the depths of my heart because of the profound impact I knew it would have on a child's life. I also wept because I had found the type of education I had long been seeking.
Although my mother already owned and operated a Montessori school, I didn’t truly understand the principles and nuances of Montessori until I studied Maria Montessori’s method. It is a method that, when executed with reverence for children, can make a significant difference in their lives and, in turn, help to address larger societal issues.
I created Nutmeg Tree Montessori to honor my mother, provide opportunities for children from underprivileged backgrounds to experience a Montessori education, foster a diverse community where children can learn from and with each other, and help disrupt social problems in the world.
